Breeders of Bichon Frises should be experienced enough to produce high quality puppies. Both the sire and the dam should get a number of tests before breeding. There are some tests recommended for the Bichon Frise. They examine the presence of some diseases most frequently seen in the breed. Among them are bladder problems and ectropion.
The Bichon Frise is generally a healthy breed. There are not many conditions that are inherited. However, no breed is void of health problems. Take urinary stones, for instance. The Bichon does suffer from this condition. The causes of this disease are still under investigation. Yet, current results indicate that urinary stones can be provoked by some genetic, as well as dietary factors. Dogs with bladder problems seem to be poor breeding stock.
What a future Bichon Frise owner should be concerned about is the health of both parent dogs and probably their ancestors. It is a must to check pedigrees and certificates. Bichon Frise dogs should have certificates from the OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals, Inc.) and CERF (Canine Eye Registration Foundation).
Some Bichon Frise breeders also supply a spay/neuter contract. It means that a future owner will not be able to breed such a puppy. Yet, do not be in a hurry to conclude that a puppy with this contract is necessarily affected. Breeders simply consider it being pet quality, but not a dog for breeding.
Other papers that raise many questions are registrations. Puppies of pet quality are usually sold with a limited registration. It means that the AKC will not register their progeny. Puppies that have breeding/showing potential are sold with full registration papers. Reputable breeders of Bichon Frises will supply all the necessary documents and explain in which way they will influence the puppy's future.
